My future self is that person I want to be ten years from now when I turn 80.
Having a clear view of my future self gives me a strong “why” and drives my daily behaviour.
It helps me avoid decisions like spending too much time on the couch watching TV and scrolling on social media. It makes it easier for me to say no to a mortadella sandwich along with a cold beer being offered by my mother-in-law when I’m visiting.
Intentional and Healthy Aging: Building a Future Without Regrets
When I’m 80, I don’t want to look back with regrets and think about what I should have done.
I know being intentional with my health, and making my physical and mental health a priority, will result in a regret-free life in the future.
Think about it.
What do you want your 80-year-old future self to be doing in 10 years’ time?
What do you want your 80-year-old future self to look like?
What purpose and meaning do you want to have in your life?
I’m in the process of transforming from an over-weight 70-year-old into an active, ageless athlete.
One of the reasons why I’m training for an Ironman is that I don’t want to become an 80-year-old complaining about all the health problems I have.
I want to remain healthy and vibrant so I can still do the things I love to do, like go fly fishing at the George River and complete an annual half Ironman until I can’t compete anymore.
I want to still be able to drive, take long walks with my wife, and travel whenever we like.
I want to maintain my independence and mobility, without relying on others for transportation to the local grocery store.
I want to keep up with changes in technology, so my future self doesn’t get left behind. I know from experience that getting left behind is a bad thing.
I want to remain relevant and purposeful for as long as I can.
I want to be surrounded by family and good friends.
I want to still be able to give back to the community and write.
And when I do reach age 80 and pass the baton on to my 80-year-old self, I expect him to thank me for staying fit and active all those years.
Bottom line: It’s a big mistake to let yourself grow old before your time.
