This is the third article in the series featuring our partners, Canadian figure skaters Kurt Browning and Donald Jackson. This article will go more in depth about Kurt Browning and his hometown of Caroline, Alberta.
Legendary Canadian figure skater, Kurt Browning was born in 1966 in Rocky Mountain House, Alberta and was raised in his hometown of Caroline, Alberta. He began figure skating as a way to improve his hockey skills, but later he dedicated his time on the ice to further improving his figure skating skills.
Kurt grew up on a 360-acre farm in central Alberta and was often seen practicing at the local arena in Caroline (a town of approximately 500 people). Kurt remembers his childhood and describes it as being a very carefree time in his life. When he wasn’t skating on a pond, he was horseback riding or sledding down a hill. His parents gave him the freedom to enjoy his childhood and didn’t give him many restrictions.
Today, Caroline, Alberta is famously known as the hometown of Canada’s figure skating champion Kurt Browning, and Kurt’s childhood arena has been appropriately renamed Kurt Browning Arena. It is a local must see as it even has a dedicated “Kurt’s Korner”, full of memorabilia throughout his skating career. Although Kurt no longer lives in Caroline (moving to Toronto, Ontario in 1992), his hometown is still very much a big part of his life. The Kurt Browning Arena stays very close to his heart and he even travels home to take part in occasional fundraisers at the arena. When he does make it back to his arena, it is no surprise that the arena is packed with his fans from Caroline and throughout Alberta to get a glimpse of the legend. He is a local hero and even the young generations of athletes from Caroline are very well versed and proud of Kurt.
